Donny van de Beek is nearing the end of his time at Manchester United. According to information from Mark Critchley of The Athletic, the Dutch midfielder, who joined the Red Devils in 2020, is believed to have traveled to Germany for a medical examination ahead of his transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt. The source also suggests that Van de Beek will depart for a fee of 11 million Euros, with additional purchase options.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought Donny van de Beek from Ajax for £35 million in 2020. However, the Dutch midfielder struggled to secure regular first-team appearances at Old Trafford. With just six Premier League starts in three and a half years since joining, it is clear evidence of Van de Beek’s difficult spell at MU.
Van de Beek has rarely featured under any of the club’s managers, and the former Ajax midfielder has only managed to score two goals in 62 appearances across all competitions. His departure is seen as a good option for both parties.
Manager Ten Hag did not prevent Van de Beek from seeking a new destination, as the player also desired a move. Van de Beek continued to train with MU players during this time; however, with the arrivals of Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat, and the emergence of young talent Mainoo showcasing excellent abilities, it became evident that there was no place for the Dutch midfielder.
Van de Beek’s departure will also help MU reduce its wage bill, giving Ten Hag the opportunity to bring in higher-quality new signings and alleviating the personnel concerns of the recent past.
Frankfurt currently sits in 8th place in the Bundesliga, and it is hoped that with this new challenge, Van de Beek can demonstrate his abilities and have a more successful career. With Euro 2024 on the horizon, there is still an opportunity for Van de Beek to impress and catch the eye of manager Ronald Koeman.
